What map skills do you teach?
Slightly integrated into social studies - use maps to teach about battles, settlement patterns (and the geographic features that create them) (KNCS)
KNCS does geography bee.
KNCS has geography as a separate 1 hr. block once a week during which time the students color a geography coloring book (KNCS) Geography- Houghton Mifflin - great resource. Daily Geography for Years 7 & 8.The books have a scope and sequence of terms. 5 themes of Geography - location, place, human/environment interaction, regions, movement (OAS)
A lot of identifying countries on maps, Briefly review latitude longitude, creating keys, scale maps (D. Hyatt-7th Grade Boys, BACS)
How to read a road map, locating cities, map terms, different types of maps, using scale (C. Nash-7th Grade Girls, BACS)
In Geography, we review basic skills, inlcuding understanding map projections, the use of various types of charts and maps, etc. This is a short review unit at the beginning of the year. (B. Conroy, 8th Grade Girls, BACS) We review: types of maps, coordinates,(these are easy for students) time zones (can be more challenging). (G. Henderson, 8th Grade Boys, BACS)
Other things you would like to share with the committee in relation to history/social studies curriculum.
The social studies teacher is a first year teacher and has taught everything in the NC Curriculum so far but can't say with authority how she wants things (KNCS)
I feel that it is impossible to completely cover the amount of history we are asked to cover in 8th grade: major social changes at home as well as five world altering wars. The relavance and impact of these cannot be handled adequately in the time we have. (8th Grade Girls, BACS) Would love a Geography curriculum for 8th Grade. (8th Grade Boys, BACS)
